It's a long time since I reviewed Kane Alexander's eponymous debut CD, but I can still remember being impressed by his smooth voice and sophisticated phrasing.
On stage, he's warm, charming, and very relaxed. He has a musical theatre voice with a supper club persona. From Gershwin to Seal via Hello Dolly and Johnny Farnham, All I Know is an eclectic collection of favourites from Alexander's personal song-book.
The on-stage setting suits the mood perfectly, with Alexander brilliantly accompanied by his musical director on keys, and superb percussion and bass. Together, the trio gives depth and resonance to Alexander's apparently effortless vocals.
There was special warmth to this performance with his mum and dad, over from hometown country Victoria, in the audience. And some sentiment, too, because this was the very stage where he sang his first professional musical theatre role in South Pacific in 1986 (or thereabouts…a show I saw, but I didn't know of him then).
This is a superb concert from an accomplished performer. He's even in the foyer after the show ready to sign CDs and charm the punters. See him tonight, last chance, before he heads off – probably back to the Big Apple where they love him to bits. He's sung the Algonquin; I think he should star at Sardis next.
Until June 21, Festival Theatre Stage.
ENDS.
