SKINNY Meals in Heels "is NOT a diet book", declares author Jennifer Joyce. But it is really – it's a diet for healthy living, not a "help, I have to drop a dress size by Friday" diet. This is a seriously glamorous cookbook that happens to be full of tasty but still good-for-you meals.
From the very first recipe for "Oven-dried cherry tomatoes with lemon-oregano salt", under Snacks & Nibbles, to the last one for "Lemon angel food cake", in Skinny Puds, this book is a delight. Each recipe has handy hints about what can be prepared in advance, always helpful for the busy cook. A little note called "The Skinny" explains why the recipe is good for you and offers more tips about healthy eating.
There is something of a world-cuisine flavour to the book (sorry, couldn't help myself!) with Turkish bulgur salad, Sicilian fish stew, and Thai pumpkin curry among many divine recipes with an ethnic twist. I haven't made it to the Bengali salmon parcels yet, but they look pretty good, and who could resist the little cocoa kisses?
The artwork is the real highlight of this book, with sensational illustrations by Megan Hess. These are colourful slices of New York street life, sort of Sex and the City goes to market. A gorgeous little black dog, a chihuahua I think, looks out grumpily from many of the pictures. He must be on a diet too!
Skinny Meals in Heels deserves a place in every girl's kitchen. Buy it now as a gift for any woman in your life – or just treat yourself. It's cheaper than a restaurant meal and better for you!
